There’s no fault with The Rock’s San Andreas weekend debut

It was a big weekend at the box office, as one of Hollywood’s shining stars achieved a record debut. Here’s what went down:

The RockDwayne Johnson has come a long way from his spot in the WWE’s Nation of Domination back in the Attitude Era of professional wrestling. Now The Rock is a certified bankable movie star, which he continues to prove every year. While he was part of the massive opening weekend for Furious 7 a few months ago, that was clearly an ensemble piece. His solo time to shine this summer comes with San Andreas, which opened this weekend with $53.2 million, higher than many expected and a personal best for The Rock as the solo star. Heavy promo tours and an understanding of how to reach out to his fan base via viral videos and social media helped make The People’s Champ the weekend champ at the box office.

As for the rest of the top five, Pitch Perfect 2 held onto second place with $14.8 million. Last week’s number one film Tomorrowland took a tumble to third with $13.8 million. Mad Max: Fury Road continued its winning ways, hitting fourth place with $13.6 million. That number brings the movie’s North American total to $115.9 million, putting it massively ahead as the most successful film in the franchise. Closing things out in fifth place is Avengers: Age of Ultron with 10.9 million, bringing its North American total to $427.1 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) San Andreas – $48 million
2) Pitch Perfect 2 – $18 million
3) Mad Max: Fury Road – $15 million
4) Tomorrowland – $14.5 million

  1. It hit $10 million, Derrick. I think Cameron Crowe’s lost his touch.
