It’s the fourth of July weekend, which sees three new movies gunning for the top spot at the box office. Will any of them have the power to take down Transformers? Here’s our prediction:
Tammy is the latest comedy to star Melissa McCarthy, who has been striking gold with her last few films. Co-written by McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone, this one feels like the first where the actress is carrying things on her own, rather than with a big name co-star (Sandra Bullock or Jason Bateman). However popular McCarthy may be right now, she doesn’t stand a chance against robots in disguise. Look for a second place showing with $25 million.
Also opening this weekend are kids flick Earth to Echo and horror film Deliver Us From Evil, neither of which will have much muscle at the box office. Look for Deliver Us From Evil to grab third place with $19 million, with Earth to Echo in fourth with $16 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Transformers: Age of Extinction should have no problems holding on to number one for the second week in a row – look for it to bring in $42 million, while 22 Jump Street will close things out in fifth with $11 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Transformers: Age of Extinction – $42 million
2) Tammy – $25 million
3) Deliver Us From Evil – $19 million
4) Earth to Echo – $16 million
5) 22 Jump Street – $11 million
