This weekend, audiences make it clear that they were hungry for Catching Fire, as the second instalment in The Hunger Games franchise did big business at the box office. Here’s what went down:
Catching Fire managed to do what all studios want to see from a sequel – outperform the origin. This time out, Katniss and Peta brought in an outstanding $161 million, nearly $10 million more than the original did. While it was a little lower than the studios were hoping, it still broke the November box office record. Look for Catching Fire to reign over the box office for at least another weekend.
Find out how the rest of the box office turned out after the jump!
Meanwhile, Vince Vaughn’s Delivery Man was dead on arrival, bringing in a horrific $8.2 million. Whoever decided that the film would be good counter programming against Catching Fire is probably fearing for their job right now.
As for the rest of the top five, Thor: The Dark World fell to number two with $14 million. The Best Man Holiday grabbed third place with $12.5 million, while Free Birds closed things out in fifth with $5.3 million.
