Catching Fire Burns Bright – Biff Bam Pop’s Box Office Wrap-Up Report

This weekend, audiences make it clear that they were hungry for Catching Fire, as the second instalment in The Hunger Games franchise did big business at the box office. Here’s what went down:

Catching-Fire_posterCatching Fire managed to do what all studios want to see from a sequel – outperform the origin. This time out, Katniss and Peta brought in an outstanding $161 million, nearly $10 million more than the original did. While it was a little lower than the studios were hoping, it still broke the November box office record. Look for Catching Fire to reign over the box office for at least another weekend.

Meanwhile, Vince Vaughn’s Delivery Man was dead on arrival, bringing in a horrific $8.2 million. Whoever decided that the film would be good counter programming against Catching Fire is probably fearing for their job right now.

As for the rest of the top five, Thor: The Dark World fell to number two with $14 million. The Best Man Holiday grabbed third place with $12.5 million, while Free Birds closed things out in fifth with $5.3 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Catching Fire – $180 million
2) Thor: The Dark World – $16.5 million
3) The Best Man Holiday – $16 million
4) Delivery Man – $10 million
5) Last Vegas – $6 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Catching Fire – $161 million
2) Thor: The Dark World – $14 million
3) The Best Man Holiday – $12.5 million
4) Delivery Man – $8.2 million
5) Free Birds – $5.3 million
