Roh Roh! It’s Scooby-Doo Team-Up #1 On The Wednesday Run–November 6, 2013

You know, there have been a lot of heavy comics in this column of late: The Witching Hour, Coffin Hill, and The Spectral Engine. I suppose it’s because last month was the month of October. And I suppose it’s because last month, this site was celebrating something we like to call 31 Days of Horror. We love Halloween ‘round these parts and publishers saved their best horror comics for the scariest of the autumn months!

But we’re talking comic books here! Won’t someone think of the children?!?

Well, DC Comics has. And roh boy, it’s a bit of a blast from the past!

As a kid, Scooby-Doo was one of my favourite cartoon characters. I still remember having a small, plush doll of the character that came with me wherever I went.

I was a huge fan of his original series of truly mysterious (and awesomely animated), Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? episodes, which ran through 1969-1970, even though I watched it in rerun form at a much later date. I still valiantly followed Scoobs through The New Scooby–Doo Movies (featuring pop-culture guest stars like Sonny and Cher, Don Knotts, Davy Jones and Dick Van Dyke), even though I knew this string of cartoons catered to mainstream masses and watered-down the attraction of a heroic group of paranormal-investigating “meddling kids”. I, like many others, even endured Scooby’s All-Star Laff-A-Lympics and Scooby’s All-Stars, series.

I was out when Scrappy-Doo showed up.

This new kid got billing in the Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo cartoon of 1979 without ever earning that position! Maybe I had outgrown Scooby and his super-infused Scooby Snacks, but in my mind, that little mutt ruined everything that was good about the show. Even at a young age, I wanted Scrappy and his bad attitude put down. Come to think of it, I can’t recall one person that ever spoke highly of Scrappy-Doo.

But I digress.

Like The New Scooby-Doo Movies of the 1970’s, today sees the first issue release of Scooby-Doo Team-Up, a bi-monthly mini-series featuring everyone’s favourite investigative dog, this time teaming up with Batman and Robin! After a number of heavy comic book releases, this series is a kid’s comic book dream! In this issue, Scooby and the gang investigate a mysterious bat-like creature as they cross paths with the Dynamic Duo, hot on the trail of the monstrous Man-Bat! Talk about upping the ante! Heck, the next issue sees Scoobs team up with Ace the Bat-Hound as they try to take down the Scarecrow!

It’s one juicy partnership after another when it comes to Scooby-Doo Team-Up. Make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick it up for that cartoon and comic book loving little kid (or that cartoon and comic book loving little kid in you).

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
