George A. Romero, the writer and director of 1968’s Night of the Living Dead – as well as many other fantastic films since then – is unquestionably the Godfather of the genre.

Now, instead of the silver screen, he has his sights set squarely on the medium of comic books to tell his next zombie tale: Empire of the Dead.

Empire of the Dead Maleev CoverYesterday, Friday, October 4, 2013, Marvel Comics issued a press release covering the details of what will surely be one of the most anticipated publications of the upcoming year. George A. Romero will be teaming with fan-favourite artist Alex Maleev for the all-new comic book series Empire of the Dead.

Marvel will highlight the series at the New York Comic Con next weekend with a panel featuring Romero.

Here’s a snippet from the press release:

“This January, experience the next epic from the Godfather of the Zombie Apocalypse himself – George A. Romero! Marvel is proud to announce Empire of the Dead, an all-new comic series written by George A. Romero with stunning art by Alex Maleev and gorgeous NYC-themed variant covers by Arthur Suydam!

“George A. Romero singlehandedly created the zombie genre that’s captured the public imagination for decades,” says Editor In Chief Axel Alonso.  “Now, his unique vision for the silver screen comes to life on the comic book page – a chilling rumination on human nature and man’s place in the food chain, served with a terrifying twist.”

Welcome to New York City years after the plague has hit.  But just because the Big Apple has been quarantined doesn’t mean that everyone inside is safe!  Flesheating zombies roam within the confines of Manhattan…but they’re not the only predator that’s poised and ready to strike!  Who or what is this new menace?”

Empire of the Dead from Romero and Maleev, this coming January. Now that’s some undead horror we should all be looking forward to!
