With no other family films in competition, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 was the only choice this weekend for young kids and adults to check out together. The film had a strong opening with $35.5 million, about $5 million more than the original grossed its own opening weekend, and should play well over the next few weekends.
Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
Debuting in third place with $10.6 million was the Ron Howard directed, Chris Hemsworth-staring Rush. While critics were very high on the film, its relatively low return this weekend shows the belief that racing films don’t really resonate in theatres continues to hold true. It also has to make one question how just how big a star Hemsworth is outside of his role as Marvel’s Thor. What do you think?
Debuting in fifth place with a lacklustre $8.9 million was Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Don Jon. I was definitely surprised with this result, as there had been some buzz around this film and Gordon-Levitt has been doing lots of media promoting it, including a stellar, honest interview with Howard Stern that you can watch below. The film will likely find its audience on DVD, but it’s still a shame that more people weren’t interested in seeing a film that critics have found very original.
As for the rest of the top five, Prisoners dropped to second place with $11.4 million, while another new release, Baggage Claim, debut in fourth place $9.7 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 – $40 million
2) Don Jon – $18 million
3) Prisoners – $14 million
4) Rush – $12 million
5) Insidious Chapter 2 – $9 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:

2) Prisoners – $11 million
3) Rush – $10.6 million
4) Baggage Claim – $7 million
5) Don Jon– $8.9 million
