Written by Greg Rucka and Ed Brubaker and partially illustrated by Michael Lark, DC Comics published Gotham Central from 2003-2006, lasting forty monthly issues in the process. It told the story of the GCPD, detailing the difficult lives of police officers operating in a city full of super villains. Batman, interestingly, was a character that seemed ever-present (as he would seem to the police force in Gotham City), but rarely seen in the series. Instead, stories focused directly on the ensemble cast, garnering both an Eisner and Harvey Award for, respectively, Best Serialized Story and Best Single Issue, in 2004.

You can read more about the collected storylines of the series here.

Today, Greg Rucka and Michael Lark return with the first issue of the monthly series, Lazarus, published by Image Comics – who are publishing so many great comic books these days!

Lazarus is a sci-fi noir series set in a dystopian near-future. Here, families have banded together in a feudal state where the elite control all the wealth and everyone else is merely a serf. Sounds a little like a not-so-strange extrapolation of where our own society might be headed, doesn’t it?  The main character of the story is a young woman named Forever – a lethal protector of the Carlyle family who control the earth’s genetic research and development initiatives. The tag line for the series is a kicker.

“Her story starts the day she is killed.”

With Lazarus, expect compelling stories of social and political merit – where character-driven drama is at the heart – all merged with gritty action. Of course, you’ll find this alongside realistic and stirring artwork. It’s a beautiful thing to behold.

Rucka and Lark together again? Yeah, this is memorable storytelling in the making, in our favourite artistic medium, and we all need to be there!

Rise up! Make the run to your local comic book shop today and pick up Lazarus #1.

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
