Two big releases are looking for your dollars this weekend, and while neither will be critical darlings, they both should have serious appeal to their respective fan bases. Here are our predictions:
After nearly a yearlong delay, G.I. Joe: Retaliation finally hits the big screen in 3D, with Dwayne The Rock Johnson as the big draw in this sequel/reboot to the first film. We’ll have a review up for this one in the next few days, but it’s safe to say it will be very interesting to see how audiences take to Retaliation. Critics are already giving it a beating, but there are a lot of geeks who are digging the more serious tone. Regardless of your preference, the film should have a decent open weekend, thanks in part to The Rock’s tireless promotion. Look for G.I. Joe: Retaliation to debut atop the box office with $45 million.
Find out how the rest of the weekend will turn out after the jump!
The Host comes from author Stephanie Meyers, best known as the creator of Twilight. Because of that, this sci-fi/romance flick geared towards teens should have a decent opening weekend. We’re not talking Twilight numbers of course, that would be a huge surprise. Instead, look for a fourth place debut with a strong $17 million.
Also out this weekend is a new non-Madea film from Tyler Perry, Temptation. Perry has a built-in audience, but one that clearly prefers him as Madea. Look for Temptation to close out the top five with $15 million.
As for the rest of the top five, The Croods will drop to second place with $30 million, while the surprise hit of last week, Olympus Has Fallen, will grab third place with $20 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) G.I. Joe: Retaliation – $45 million
2) The Croods – $30 million
3) Olympus Has Fallen – $20 million
4) The Host – 17 million
5) Tyler Perry’s Temptation – $15 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
