Magic, Sci-Fi and Super Powers Defend Our World From Mysterious Conspiracies On The Wednesday Run – December 7, 2011

There are a ton of comics out this Wednesday, December 6 – much more so than the slow release week of November 30. Along with regularly solicited monthly comics, there’s a whole host of trades and compilations out too. The push into the holiday season and the New Year is most definitely on.

A while back, I exclaimed Doctor Strange as the most underused character in all of Marvel Comics. The man of the mystical arts gets no respect! One of the most powerful character in Marvel Comics and he can’t even hold down his own solo series! For shame!

Well, I must have been good enough this year to get an early Christmas present in the form of the “strange” doctor starring in seminal super group comic book series, The Defenders – clearly a return to form for the man!

The heyday for The Defenders was certainly during the 1970’s and early 1980’s where the team fought against everything from the invasion of inter-planer Lovecraftian beings to terrorist groups, to alternate-dimension enemies with cosmic powers. It was the one Marvel title that truly had no barriers. Characters and storylines could go…well, anywhere! And it looks like that mantra will return on a monthly basis with December’s publication of the new The Defenders #1.

Written by Marvel stalwart, Matt Faction and illustrated in a smooth, detailed and beautiful style by fan favourite Terry Dodson, the team, made up of Doctor Strange, Red She-Hulk, Namor, the Silver Surfer and Iron Fist (some heavy hitters, indeed!) investigate a mysterious conspiracy deep within the heart of the Marvel Universe. With The Defenders, the story has to be of a grand design. They are, of course, the last line of defense against the forces of the unknown!

So make the Wednesday run and pick up The Defenders #1 – and discover all the mysterious machinations, good and evil, that makes Marvel tick!

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
