So show me your cigarette lighters and pucker up, as we take a look at two essential rock and roll movies .

Think you know everything about Ozzy Osbourne? Think you know anything about the Prince of Darkness? Well, God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, the new documentary made in cooperation with Ozzy, his family and friends reveals a lot more than any of us would expect, and I’ve been writing about the man for ten years now. Forget the idiocy of The Osbournes reality show that gave the entire family a bad name. This documentary traces Ozzy from his beginnings with Black Sabbath through his solo career into his later day role as a heavy metal icon. Along the way, we learn about the family he had before Sharon and the kids, the devastation he felt with the death of the legendary Randy Rhodes and how far he’s come today as a recovering drug and alcohol addict. This is a warts and all film and does much to frame Ozzy as the legend his is rather than the caricature his reality show painted him as. God Bless Ozzy Osbourne is well worth watching for fans of the man, metal and rock alike.

If you’re looking for a solid concert film to show off your speakers and remind you what the World’s Greatest Rock and Roll Band were like without all the big stadium shows and props that go with them, you’ve got to check out the Rolling Stones Some Girls Live In Texas Blu-Ray. This is a fantastic document of the Stones at arguably the peak of the powers. A small arena, no back up singers, and Ronnie Wood with the band on his first full tour. The band is promoting music of of Some Girls, their 1978 album that features a mixture of sounds, from punk to pop to country and disco – it’s no wonder the album is their biggest seller in North America – it pretty much has something for everyone. While some swear by the Stones of the early 70’s, with Mick Taylor on lead guitar, Taylor never had the stage presence or camaraderie with Keith Richards that Ronnie Wood demonstrates throughout the show. As for Mick Jagger, well, Some Girls Live In Texas is the perfect example of why he remains one of, if not, the greatest frontmen in rock and roll. For Stones fans, this Blu-Ray is a must have.

  1. With Ozzy rhyming ‘masses’ with ‘masses’, it’s gotta be ‘War Pigs’

And ‘Fool to Cry’ is often overlooked as a killer Stones tune.

  2. Wow, Fool To Cry – that’s a surprise choice for any fan. Interesting.

  3. Ozzy – No More Tears
    Stones – Angie

(gah! Those are SUCH girl answers!)

  4. No More Tears is pretty kick ass.

    No comment on Angie 🙂

  5. Without a doubt Ozzy would be Crazy Train – nothing comes close in my books – it is so friggin fun to sing and I used to throw it into the middle of songs when my band Tempus Fugit played in the 90’s.

Stone would have to be Gimme Shelter for Merry Clayton’s vocal alone – it is up there with Clare Torry’s The Great Gig In The Sky as far as out of this world vocal insanity goes. But the song’s got balls like no other Stones song – it sounds dangerously scary.
