Attention Tom Petty fans! The first Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers live album in 13 years, Live at the Fillmore (1997), is due out on November 25 via Warner Records. Released in a collaboration between the Petty Estate and Mike Campbell, Live at the Fillmore (1997) is composed of recordings from the last six dates of the band’s 20-show run at famed San Francisco venue The Fillmore.
The Fillmore played home to Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers when they were at the absolute top of their game and that was by design. Speaking to San Francisco Chronicle before the band kicked off their historic residency, Tom Petty stated: “We’re musicians and we want to play. We’ve made so many records in the past five years, I think the best thing for us to do is just go out and play and it will lead us to our next place, wherever that may be.”
Needless to say, the shows were a rousing success so much so that the Heartbreakers were even dubbed “The Fillmore House Band.” Reflecting on the band’s run of shows at the Fillmore, guitarist Mike Campbell says: “Playing the Fillmore in 1997 for a month was one of my favorite experiences as a musician in my whole life. The band was on fire and we changed the set list every night. The room and the crowd was spiritual… AND… we got to play with some amazing guests. I will always remember those nights with joy and inspiration.”
A must-have for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers fans and all the collectors out there, Live at the Fillmore (1997) will be in various formats. There’s the standard 2-CD and 3-LP sets as well as the more deluxe 4-CD and 6-LP editions. And if you’re hardcore, there’s a 6-LP Uber Deluxe set that comes in a hand-made cymbal road case with a ton of extra goodies that’s only available via the Tom Petty webstore. The setlist consists of everything from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers classics like “Runnin’ Down A Dream”, “American Girl” and “Free Fallin’” to covers of songs from Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, Bill Withers, and more.
The first taste of what’s to come from Live at the Fillmore (1997) is the single “Listen to Her Heart” which also has a fun Peter Sluszka-directed music video. Mixing archival footage with animation and a singing guitar pick that steals the show, the “Listen to Her Heart” video lends itself to repeat viewing.
