‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Powers Up To A Record Box Office

It was a strong weekend at the box office, as one of the most recognizable icons in video games made its big-screen leap.

In the midst of decent reviews and long weekends in North America, Sonic The Hedgehog debut in first place with an outstanding $57 million. It’s the best showing ever for a film based on a video game and put to rest the doubters who weren’t impressed when the film’s first trailer arrived last year. Can you say sequel, because with this showing we’re probably going to get one.

As for the rest of the top five, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey dropped to second place with $17 million. The film has already made $145 million on an $80 million budget, so while it’s North American showing isn’t great, the film may not be a loss of the studio.

Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island battled terrible reviews to land in third place with $12.4 million, following right behind it in fourth place by The Photograph with $12.3 million. Don’t be surprised to see these two flip spots when the actuals arrive. Bad Boys For Life closed things out in fifth place with $11.3 million.
