Will ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Race To A Strong Box Office Debut?

It’s a big weekend for video game fans, as the live-action Sonic The Hedgehog film arrives on screens. Will anybody check it out?

Probably, but they’ll likely do so with either hesitation or outright concern. The original design for Sonic here didn’t set the world ablaze, but so far reviews have been in the “ok” territory. Jim Carey is meant to be the big draw here, but it’s been a while since Carey’s had a hit to call his own. Instead, the film is going to rely on families looking for a night out and whatever fanbase Sonic brings to the table. Look for a first place debut with $35 million.

Also new this weekend is the romance The Photograph, which is primed to bring in couples looking for a movie on Valentine’s Day. The movie will definitely be frontloaded on Friday night, but look for it to debut in third place with $15 million.

The final new release to arrive is Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island, a dark take on the classic Ricardo Montalban series. Reviews have yet to arrive, but the film’s two hours and thirty-six-minute runtime is not going to help its chances at breaking out, even though it looks like a fun film. Look for a fourth place debut with $12 million.

As for the rest of the top five, last week’s number one, now known as Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey will drop to second place with $17 million, while Bad Boys For Life will close things out in fifth place with $10 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Sonic The Hedgehog – $35 million
2) Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey – $17 million
3) The Photograph – $15 million
4) Blumehouse’s Fantasy Island – $12 million
5) Bad Boys For Life – $10 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
