Holiday Gift Guide 2019: Studio Ghibli Limited Edition Sets

For fans of Studio Ghibli, there are some excellent special edition versions of a variety of high profile titles available for the holiday season. These sets come with Blu-ray versions of a film along with the soundtrack to said movie. Both discs are contained in gorgeous hardcover books that detail the creation of the various films, along with the original art. Studio Ghibli has its die-hard fans who will no doubt be grabbing all the films available, these sets are also ideal for newcomers with an interest in the studio.

We were sent review copies of three particular titles, and they all shone in these formats. Here’s the rundown of what we checked out and what is contained in each set:

This limited-edition set comes housed in an elegant hard slipcase and includes a new 40-page book with stunning art and essays. Featured in a deluxe disc portfolio is a Blu-ray of the film paired with hours of special features, and the film’s soundtrack on CD, now available exclusively on disc in North America.

The set’s 40-page book features essays by film critic Kenneth Turan (The Los Angeles Times) and famed critic and film historian Leonard Maltin, and statements by Toshio Suzuki and Hayao Miyazaki.

The set’s 40-page book features new essays by film critic Glenn Kenny (The New York Times, RogerEbert.com) alongside amazing imagery and statements from director Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki, and Miyazaki’s poems about the characters.

Inflicted with a deadly curse, the young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure. There, he stumbles into a bitter conflict between Lady Eboshi, the proud people of Iron Town, and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the humans from destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal gods who live there.

The set’s 40-page book features new essays by The New York Times’ film critic A.O. Scott and film writer Lauren Wilford, alongside gorgeous art, statements from director Hayao Miyazaki and producer Toshio Suzuki, and more.

When Satsuki and her sister Mei move with their father to a new home in the countryside, they find country life is not as simple as it seems. They soon discover that the house and nearby woods are full of strange and delightful creatures, including a gigantic but gentle forest spirit called Totoro, who can only be seen by children.
