It was a big weekend for adult dramas at the box office and a pretty disappointing one for a would-be franchise.
Ford v Ferrari had an excellent debut, racing to $31 million in its first weekend. The reviews, nearly all solid, definitely helped bring adults into the theatre, though I’d also suggest the combination of Matt Damon and Christan Bale helped as well. About $5 million of the film’s North American gross came from IMAX theatres, which is a strong showing for a dramatic movie. The principles should enjoy this victory lap for now, because it’s not going to last long.
As for the rest of the top five, they were all neck in neck in poor performances. Midway dropped to number two with $8.8 million, while Charlie’s Angels could only muster up $8.6 million for its debut weekend. The lack of star power combined with the poor reviews definitely hurt this one. Playing With Fire is neck and neck with Charlie’s Angels with $8.55 million, while Last Christmas closed things out with $6.7 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Ford v Ferrari – $25 million
2) Charlie’s Angels – $14 million
3) Midway – $10 million
4) Playing With Fire – $9.5 million
5) Doctor Sleep – $8 million
And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:
1) Ford v Ferrari – $31 million

3) Charlie’s Angels – $8.6 million
