‘Maleficent’, ‘Zombieland’ Sequels Enter the Box Office This Weekend

It’s a big weekend at the box office, with two sequels looking to scare up some decent dollars. Only one can hit the top, though, and it should do it with a semi-magical debut.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil is the sequel to 2014’s Maleficent, which made nearly $250 million in North America. Angelina Jolie returns in the title role and is joined this time by Michelle Pfeiffer. Disney films tend to be critic-proof, which is good news for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which is getting some pretty horrible reviews. Look for a first place arrival with $54 million.

Also new this weekend is Zombieland: Double Tap, the sequel to the beloved 2009 film starring Woody Harrelson, Jessie Eisenberg, Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin. The principles have returned for this one, as has director Ruben Fleischer. With no big horror films in the offering at the moment, this will be the choice for genre lovers. Look for a third place debut with $26 million.

As for the rest of the top five, Joker will drop to second place with $28 million. The Addams Family will be in fourth with $18 million, while Gemini Man will close things out in fifth place with $9 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Maleficent: Mistress of Evil – $54 million
2) Joker – $28 million
3) Zombieland: Double Tap – $26 million
4) The Addams Family – $18 million
5) Gemini Man – $9 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
