Regardless of our personal opinions good or bad, none of us can argue that this weekend Joker laughed all the way to the bank.
The standalone origin story from director Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix had a record-breaking debut of $94 million, the biggest October opening in history. That’s an incredible number for a film that many moviegoers are realizing isn’t really a comic book experience a la Marvel or previous DC big screen entries. Joker is a tough, hard, and often depressing character study, and on its way to becoming what just may be the most financially successful one at that. Like everyone who has seen Joker, I have thoughts, and I highly recommend reading Sachin Hingoo’s review for a take that sums up most of my feelings as well. The question that now comes up – was Joker frontloaded and drop hard next weekend, or will it have legs over the coming weeks?
As for the rest of the top five, Abominable was in second place with $12 million. Downtown Abbey was in third place with $8 million. Hustlers hit fourth place with $6 million, while IT: Chapter Two closed things out with $5 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Joker – $85 million
2) Abominable – $16 million
3) Downton Abbey – $13 million
4) Hustlers – $8 million
5) IT: Chapter Two – $6.5 million
