Apparently, a lot of folks had been waiting for the Downton Abbey film to arrive in theatres.
The film, a continuation of the hugely popular English television drama, debut on top of the box office with an estimated $31 million. That’s a record for Focus Features and demonstrates that adults can will definitely go to theatres for something other than super hero films if it’s the right movie. Yes, Downton Abbey is franchise based, but this is a period drama piece, not exactly the stuff of blockbusters, making its success that much more exciting.
It wears a battle for second place between Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Blood, and the numbers today but the former ahead with $19.2 million and the latter so close behind with $19 million. Things could certainly change when the actual arrive later this week.
As for the rest of the top five, IT: Chapter Two was in fourth place with $17.2 million, with Hustlers closing things out in fifth place with $17 million. Again, those films could flip when the actuals come out.
