As I say every year around this time, we’ve entered the dog days of summer at the box office, where all the big blockbusters have been unleashed and studios are releasing smaller fare. That being said, there’s definitely one movie well worth catching for horror and thriller fans.
Ready or Not is a gruesomely entertaining horror-thriller-comedy about a bride who marries into a family that insists she plays a game the night of her wedding. The game winds up being a killer version of hide and seek. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett from a screenplay by Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy, Ready or Not features an outstanding lead performance by Samara Weaving as Grace, the bride-to-be, along with familiar faces like Adam Brody, Andy McDowell and Henry Czerny. The concept is unique and the movie moves at a fairly quick pace, never overstaying its welcome thanks to its 93 minutes run time. For some casual viewers, those that go in thinking this might be simply a taut thriller, the gore might be a little too much at moments, but overall Ready or Not is a lot of fun. With strong reviews, I’m thinking audiences are going to be open to seeing something new this weekend so look for a second-place debut with $13 million.
But if Ready or Not isn’t hitting the top spot, what film will? It’s looking like Angel Has Fallen, the third entry in the …Has Fallen series starring Gerard Butler will manage to grab number one this weekend, even with some pretty poor reviews coming with it. Look for it to debut with $16 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Good Boys will be in third place with $11 million, Hobbs and Shaw will grab the fourth spot with $10 million, while Disney’s The Lion King will close things out in fifth place with $8 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Angel Has Fallen – $16 million
2) Ready or Not – $13 million
3) Good Boys – $11 million
4) Hobbs and Shaw – $10 million
5) Disney’s The Lion King – $8 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
