What should have been a quiet weekend wound up being pretty exciting for at least one new release.
Horror film The Curse of La Llorona debuted with an absolutely excellent $27 million, significantly higher than most pundits anticipated. The movie, which was made for $9 million, is already a financial success off of its debut. Enjoy it while it lasts, though, because it’s going to have to cede the top spot next week.
As for the rest of the top five, Shazam fell to second place with $17 million. The new film, Breakthrough, debuted in third place with $11 million, followed in fourth place with Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel, which made $9 million, finally crossing the magic $400 million mark. Little closed things out in fifth place with $8.4 million.
