’The Upside’ Makes A Surprise Debut On Top Of The Box Office

As much as I like it when I can nail my predictions, it’s always cool to be surprised, and that’s exactly what happened this weekend at the box office.

I was sure audiences wouln’t be into checking out the new Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston film, The Upsidez, what with the not-so-good publicity Hart’s been receiving, along with the generally poor reviews the movies gotten. But hey, I was wrong; turns out audiences DID turn out for The Upside, putting it in the top spot for its debut weekend with $19.6 million. Not a huge amount, but certainly nothing to scoff at either.

As for the rest of the top five, Aquaman had to settle for number two in its fourth weekend, with an estimated $17.3 million. The film should cross the $300 million in North America by next weekend, and has already managed to cross $1 billion worldwide. A Dog’s Way Home debut in third place with an underwhelming $11 million, followed close in fourth place by Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse with $9 million. Escape Room closed things out in fifth place with $8.9 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Aquaman – $20 million
2) A Dog’s Way Home – $13 million
3) The Upside – $12.5 million
4) Mary Poppins Returns – $10 million
5) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $9 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) The Upside – $19.6 million
2) Aquaman – $17.3 million
3) A Dog’s Way Home – $1q million
4) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse  – $9 million
