Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis and the rise of the sons of Aryas – there was Conan the Barbarian!
And before the comic that bears his name gets released today, Conan has seen comic book publication in many different forms, many different titles, and many different publishers. But the one publisher that many readers most remember him by is Marvel Comics.
Stories featuring Conan the Barbarian, created by American author Robert E. Howard, first appeared in pulp magazine Weird Tales in the first half of the twentieth century. By the time of his death in 1936, Howard had completed twenty-one Conan stories, most of which saw publication. Even with the occasional compilation, the character fell into relative fictional obscurity – until comic books took up the mantle in the early 1970’s with publisher Marvel Comics.
Featuring the early writing and drawing talents of now-industry legends, Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith and John Buscema, Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan were born! These are the two titles that readers of high fantasy would most fondly remember.
