‘Aquaman’, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Claim The Top Two Spots At The Box Office

A little pat on the back, as we close out the 2018 year in box office with some decent predictions on our part.

The rumours of the death of the DC Cinematic Universe are definitely a little exaggerated, seeing as how well the latest standalone film in the series is performing. Aquaman was the number one film in North America for the second weekend in a row, bringing in an estimated $51 million, down just 23% week to week. That’s an outstanding number, with a two week total now standing at $188 million. $250 million is well in reach for Aquaman, perhaps even $300 million depending on the opening weeks of 2019. Either way, the film has already made more than $700 million worldwide, a bigger haul than the hyped Justice League.

As for the rest of the top five, Mary Poppins Returns was in second place with $28 million. Bumblebee was in third place with $20 million, while Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was right behind it in fourth with $18 million. The Mule closed things out in fifth place with $11 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Aquaman – $53 million
2) Mary Poppins Returns – $27 million
3) Bumblebee – $22 million
4) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $18 million
5) The Mule – $10.5 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Aquaman – $51 million
2) Mary Poppins Returns – $28 million
3) Bumblebee – $20 million
4) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $18 million
5) The Mule – $11 million

Next weekend sees the release of Escape Room. Be sure to check back on Friday to see our predictions!
