It’s the last weekend of 2018, and while Christmas Day saw the release of two new films in Holmes and Watson and Vice, respectively, neither will make much of an impact as we close out the year.
Instead, look for Aquaman to be the final number one film of 2018. The movie has done well since its release last Friday, and has already crossed the $100 million mark. BBP’s Scotty G and I saw Aquaman on Boxing Day and we both enjoyed it, perhaps Scotty a bit more than myself. Jason Momoa was fantastic as the lead character, with a strong performance and the required charisma on screen. He should be the leader of the DC Universe on the big screen going forward. Look for Aquaman to hold steady at number one this weekend with $53 million.
Mary Poppins Returns will follow in second place, and with the holidays behind us and families looking to kill time over the winter break, it could see a bit of an uptick in performance week to week, with $27 million. The same can be said for the well-regarded Bumblebee, which will be in third place with $22 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse will be in fourth with $18 million, while The Mule will close things out in fifth place with $10.5 million.
The absolutely horrible Holmes and Watson (which my mom and I went to on Christmas Day – it has a few funny moments, but as a whole it’s wretched) and Vice will be outside the top five.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Aquaman – $53 million
2) Mary Poppins Returns – $27 million
3) Bumblebee – $22 million
4) Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse – $18 million
5) The Mule – $10.5 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
