It was a solid weekend for comedy superstars Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, as their new film Night School debut at the top of the box office.
The poorly reviewed film managed to hit the right spot with audiences, bringing in an estimated $28 million. It was the strongest three-day showing yet for a comedy this year. However, look for a huge drop-off next weekend, when two of the most of the most anticipated films of the season arrive in theatres.
As for the rest of the top five, family film Smallfoot debut in second place with $23 million. This one may have legs over the coming weeks, as a choice for families looking to find something less venomy than the next Marvel-related film. The House With A Clock In Its Walls dropped 53% to third place with $12.5 million, which isn’t a bad hold for a kids/horror film. A Simple Favor was in fourth place with $6.6 million, while The Nun closed things out in fifth place with $5.4 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Night School – $29 million
2) Smallfoot – $25 million
3) The House With A Clock In Its Walls – $15 million
4) A Simple Favor – $7.5 million
5) The Nun – $6.5 million
