‘The Predator’ Fumbles Big Time at the Weekend Box Office

Well, here’s the deal. The Predator as a franchise just doesn’t appeal to a mass audience.

That’s it.

You can come up with a bunch of reasons/excuses why the film could only muster up $24 million for its opening weekend. You can blame the Olivia Munn situation, but I honestly don’t think that that was an issue at all. In fact, she made a heroic stand and her character is a badass, so there should be some actual appeal there. However, the film has no real stars in it to bring in the non-genre audience, which still didn’t seem interested in showing up. Genre fans were all excited that Shane Black was co-writing and directing, but ask the general public who Black is and they’ll simply shrug their shoulders.

While I’m not one to typically give Hollywood advice – I don’t make movies, I can’t speculate about all the decisions that go into making them – I will say this: if you want to make a Predator movie that just might make it to the masses, bring back Arnold Schwarzenegger and give us the sequel to the first film we’ve always wanted. Look at Mark Verheiden’s classic Dark Horse Comic mini-series and follow that template, and maybe you’ve got something. Then again, maybe not.

As for the rest of the top five, The Nun was in second place with $18.4 million, raising its two week total to $85.2 million. Debuting in third place was A Simple Favor with $16 million, while another new release, White Boy Rick, arrived in fourth place with $9.1 million. Finally, Crazy Rich Asians closed things out in fifth place with $8.7 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) The Predator – $32 million
2) The Nun – $20 million
3) A Simple Favor – $14 million
4) Crazy Rich Asians – $10 million
5) White Boy Rick – $8 million
