‘Crazy Rich Asians’ beats back ‘The Meg’ to Top the Box Office

Well, I wouldn’t call it an insane weekend at the box office, but it was still a successful one for Crazy Rich Asians.

The film debut in the top spot, bringing in an estimated $22.4 million over the three-day weekend. All told, since its release last Wednesday, the movie has brought in $31.1 million. It’s a solid built not an overwhelming number, and it will be interesting to see what sort of legs the film has over the coming weeks. With the critical acclaim its received, Crazy Rich Asians should play well and find a larger audience.

As for the rest of the top five, The Meg dropped to second place with $19.8 million. It’s a 56% drop week-to-week, but the film still pass the $100 million mark by next week. Mile 22 debut in third place with an underwhelming $13.9 million, which means hopes for a Mark Wahlberg franchise with this one are pretty nil at this point. Mission: Impossible – Fallout was in fourth place with $10.8 million, while Disney’s Christopher Robin closed things out in fifth place with $9.6 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Crazy Rich Asians – $32 million
2) The Meg – $21 million
3) Mile 22 – $15 million
4) Mission: Impossible – Fallout – $13 million
