‘Hotel Transylvania 3’, ‘Skyscraper’ Battle for Top Spot at the Box Office

This is one of those weekends that I love to watch at the box office. You’ve got two high profile new releases hitting theaters, plus a strong holdover from last week. Any one of these films could hit the top. Which will it be?

If I was a betting person (which I’m not), my money would be Hotel Transylvania 3. It’s a popular franchise, instantly recognizable, and it’s also been months since a strong family film entered the box office fray. Hotel Transylvania 3 is going to be the pick for kids this weekend, and I expect to see them out in big numbers. Look for a first place showing with $50 million.

Also new this weekend is Skyscraper, starring Dwayne Johnson. As much as I enjoy The Rock (I watched Rampage this week, and it’s an asinine yet entertaining film, one of the best video game adaptations I’ve seen), the trailers for Skyscraper have just not been doing it for me. I know they’re supposed to recall action films like Die Hard, but the concept behind this movie just feels ridiculous to me. Now, maybe audiences will be looking for a mindless action romp this weekend, but in a crowded summer box office, I don’t see Skyscraper as a must see movie. Look for a third place debut with $31 million.

As for the rest of the top five, look for Ant-Man and The Wasp to fall to second place with $33 million. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom will be in fourth place with $15 million, with Incredibles 2 right behind it in fifth place with $14.5 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Hotel Transylvania 3 – $50 million
2) Ant-Man and The Wasp – $33 million
3) Skyscraper – $31 million
4) Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – $15 million
5) Incredibles 2 – $14.5 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
