‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Arrives Frozen in Carbonite at the Box Office

We may not be the first to say it, but we’re going to anyway:

The Force was not strong with this one.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hit theatres this weekend and it really did not do well at the box office at all. The three-day weekend is currently looking at $83.3 million. That is an incredibly poor showing for a formerly must-see franchise, especially when you consider the fact that Rogue One, the previous stand alone film, debut with $155 million. What happened? The public problems during the films creation certainly didn’t help, but more than that, we just had a massive Star Wars film this past Christmas in The Last Jedi. There’s got to be a bit of breathing room between film – this isn’t the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As well, I don’t think anybody was asking for a Han Solo origin story, and the numbers here prove it. Star Was was previously a bomb-free franchise, but Solo is unfortunately on target to crush that story.

As for the rest of the top five, Deadpool 2 dropped to second place with $42.7 million, raising its two week total to $218 million. Avengers: Infinity War was in third place with $16.5 million. Book Club landed in fourth with $9.1 million, while Life of the Party closed things out in fifth place with $5.1 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Solo: A Star Wars Story – $115 million
2) Deadpool 2 – $45 million
3) Avengers: Infinity War – $17 million
4) Book Club – $9 million
5) Show Dogs – $7 million

And here’s how the three-day weekend is estimated to turn out:

2) Deadpool 2 – $42.7 million
3) Avengers: Infinity War – $16.5 million
4) Book Club – $9.1 million
