Two new notable releases are looking to get you into movie theatres this weekend – do either of them have what it takes? Here’s our prediction:
Split is a new horror film from M. Night Shyamalan, starring James McAvoy as a man with 23 different personalities who takes part in a kidnapping. Now, if this was five years ago, I would suggest that few would be all that interested in seeing Split, as Shyamalan was turning out dud after dud. However, 2015’s The Visit was a return to form and managed to gross more than $98 million on a $5 million budget. The trailers have been solid and interest in a solid horror movie should be strong. Look for a first place showing for Split with $22 million.
Also new this weekend is XXX: Return of Xander Cage, the third instalment in the XXX franchise starring Vin Diesel. While there’s no doubt the actor has a strong social media presence, and is also a big draw as part of the Fast and Furious franchise, as a solo star, Diesel simply can’t open a film – 2015’s The Last Witch Hunter couldn’t even deliver $30 million at the North American box office. While the trailer for XXX: Return of Xander Cage broke records, I don’t think that’s going to translate to big box office. Look for a second place debut with $19.5 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Hidden Figures will be in third place with $18 million. La La Land will claim fourth place with $12 million, while Sing will close things out in fifth place with $8 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Split – $22 million
2) XXX: The Return of Xander Cage – $19.5 million
3) Hidden Figures – $18 million
4) La La Land – $12 million
5) Sing – $8 million
Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
Split honestly sounds promising. I do hope it’s not another dud by the director…

I’m torn about XXX … the stunts will be eye-boggling, and Vin is kinda fun, cos he plays Vin doing all sorts of cool stuff, but I might just wait for the DVD release. 🙂
