“Rogue One” and “Hidden Figures” battle for the top of the box office

It was a tight race at the box office this weekend, as the reigning champ had to take on a strong showing from a new release. Here’s what went down:

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story appears to be the winner of the weekend with $21.97 million, raising its total to $477 million. BUT, new release Hidden Figures came on very strong this weekend and, as of Sunday night, is currently sitting at $21.8 million. So it’s a tight race, and come Monday and the box office actuals arrive, things could wind up very different.

As for the rest of the top five, Sing was in third place with $19.57 million. Underworld: Blood Wars debut in fourth place with an underwhelming $13.1 million, while La La Land closed things out in fifth place with $10 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – $35 million
2) Sing – $20 million
3) Underworld: Blood Wars – $15 million
4) Hidden Figures – $14 million
5) La La Land – $13.5 million

And here’s how the weekend is estimated to turn out:

1) Rogue One: A Star Wars Story – $21.97 million
2) Hidden Figures – $21.8 million
3) Sing – $19.57 million
4) Underworld: Blood Wars– $13.1 million
5) La La Land – $10 million
