Zootopia Edges Out Allegiant for the Box Office Race

Glenn Walker here with the Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report to see how Editor-in-chief and Box Office Guru Andy Burns did with his Predictions from Thursday evening.  Andy absolutely nailed it this weekend, all his predictions on mark within a few million dollars or so. His predictions for Zootopia in first place, The Divergent Series: Allegiant as a strong second, and Miracles from Heaven and 10 Cloverfield Lane taking third and fourth, with the merc with a mouth, Deadpool still rocking the theaters in fifth place. We’ll take a deeper look at the numbers in the Wrap-Up Report, after the jump.

Even though it dropped a bit from last weekend, Zootopia still managed to beat the big new movie this week Allegiant down to a second place debut with almost ten million between them. The amazing inspirational Miracles from Heaven with Jennifer Garner managed a respectable $15 million, while 10 Cloverfield Lane scored twelve and a half million in its second week at the box office. The buzz has been strong for this one, despite it not having much to do with the original Cloverfield, but even among those who expected some connection, folks have been digging it. And Deadpool is still in there kicking in fifth place with eight million.

Sixth and seventh place went to London Has Fallen and Whiskey Tango Foxtrot respectively. The rest of the top ten included, in descending order – The Perfect Match, Sasha baron Cohen’s spy parody The Brothers Grimsby, Leo DiCaprio’s Oscar-winning turn in The Revenant.

So, to recap, here were Biff Bam Pop’s predictions:

1) Zootopia – $33 million
2) The Divergent Series: Allegiant – $30 million
3) Miracles from Heaven – $15 million
4) 10 Cloverfield Lane – $12 million
5) Deadpool – $9 million

And here’s how things really turned out:

1) Zootopia – $38 million
2) The Divergent Series: Allegiant – $29 million
3) Miracles from Heaven – $15 million
4) 10 Cloverfield Lane – $12.5 million
5) Deadpool – $8 million

Wow, some great predictin’ there. This coming Friday sees the release of the sequel My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 with Nia Vardalos, as well as the Hank Williams bio-pic I Saw the Light, new horror The Invitation, and also a little movie called Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Check back here Friday for next week’s predictions, when Andy will be back.
