Hotel Transylvania 2 checks into the top spot at the box office

It was a big weekend at the box office, as families flocked to see a new release. Here’s what went down:

As predicted, Hotel Transylvania 2 was the number movie this weekend. Families were clearly hungry to take in a movie together, and the popularity of the franchise has certainly grown over the lasy three years, as the film debut with an oustanding $48.2 million. Franchise films are always looking to outgross the original’s opening, and in this case, Hotel Transylvania 2 made roughly $6 million more than the first instalment. As we head in to October, HT2 should have a few strong weeks at the box office.

As for the rest of the top five, The Intern braved lacklustre reviews to open in second place with $18.6 million. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials was in third place with $14 million, while Everest landed in fourth place with $12.4 million. Black Mass closed things out in fifth place with $11 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $38 million
2) The Intern – $19 million
3) Everest – $13.5 million
4) Black Mass – $13 million
5) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $12 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $48.2 million
2) The Intern – $18.6 million
3) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $14 million
4) Everest – $12.4 million
5) Black Mass – $11 million
