Drac is back with Hotel Transylvania 2

We’re looking at the biggest weekend at the box office in some time now, as a host of new films are looking to make an impact. However, there can only be one number one, and we’re pretty confident as to what it will be. Here’s our prediction:

Hotel Transylvania 2 is the sequel to the 2012 original that grossed $148 million and has had a healthy life on DVD since. Personally speaking, the first film is a lot of fun, and a movie that my daughter and I return to frequently. While Adam Sandler has been at the nadir of his career when it comes to live action films (Pixels could barely muster $76 million this past summer), I anticipate families will be heading out en masse to see Hotel Transylvania 2 this weekend. Expect a first place debut with $38 million.

Also opening this weekend is The Intern, starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway. While it’s been some time since DeNiro was able to open a film, the combination of the legend with the appealing Hathaway could be enough to appeal to an adult audience who want to leave the kids with a sitter this weekend. Look for a second place debut with $19 million.

The final notable debut is The Green Inferno, the controversial cannibal horror film from Eli Roth. While genre fans have been talking about this one since 2014, we’re the only ones. Look for a debut outside the top five, as the subject matter is too dark to find a mainstream audience.

As for the rest of the top five, Everest will hit third place with $13.5 million, followed closely in fourth by Black Mass with $13 million. The floundering Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials will close things out in fifth place with $12 million.

So, to recap, here are our predictions:

1) Hotel Transylvania 2 – $38 million
2) The Intern – $19 million
3) Everest –  $13.5 million
4) Black Mass – $13 million
5) Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials – $12 million

Be sure to check back on Sunday to see how the weekend turns out!
