Straight Outta Compton goes straight to number one

A huge opening for one of this week’s two debuts, while another one just couldn’t find itself an audience. Here’s what went down:

imageStaight Outta Compton, the critically acclaimed biopic about the hugely influential hip-hop group NWA managed to debut with an outstanding $59 million in the early box office estimates. The film definitely had crossover appeal, which combined with solid reviews, help make it this weekend’s must-seee. Whether or not it will have legs is the next question, but as we hit the dog days of summer, I anticipate Straight Outta Compton should have a decent run over the next few weeks.

As for the rest of the top five, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation was in second place with $17 million, bringing its three week total to a very respectable $138 million. Debuting in third place with a lacklustre $12.9 million was Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E., proof that not every ’60s spy franchise is meant to be brought to cinemas. Fantastic Four had a horrible 70% drop to land in fourth place with with $7.6 million, bringing its total to a franchise killing $41 million. The Gift closed things out in fifth place with $6.3 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictons:

1) Straight Outta Compton – $60 million
2) The Man From U.N.C.L.E – $18 million
3) Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – $17.5 million
4) The Gift – $7 million
5) Vacation – $4 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

2) Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation – $17.1 million
3) The Man From U.N.C.L.E. – $12.9 million
4) Fantastic Four – $7.6 million
