It’s the 4th of July long weekend, which should see some heavy movie theater attendance. But which film will show up on top? One of two new sequels? An animated flick? Or the king of the 2015 box office? Here’s our prediction:
Magic Mike XXL is the sequel to the hit 2012 film that grossed $113 million at the box office. In that time, Channing Tatum’s star has continued to rise in a large way. This is a film that will definitely superserve the female audience this weekend (along with any audience that enjoys hot guys dancing around with their abs out), so look for an excellent debut weekend of $32 million and a third place showing.
Also opening this weekend is Terminator: Genisys, which reboots the weathered franchise in a huge way. While Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in action and willingly out promoting the film, reviews have been absolutely horrid for the movie, which is currently sitting at a dismal 27% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes. I think there’s little to no chance that this film will perform with any sort of success (but hell, I’ll still go see it). Look for a fourth place showing with $30 million, far off from what a storied franchise should be grossing.
As for the rest of the top five, Inside Out and Jurassic World are going to be duking it out for first place. I’m predicting the animated hit will finally claim the top spot by the slimmest of margins, with $35 million, while the dinosaurs will drop to second place with $33.5 million. Ted should close things out in fifth place with $18 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) inside Out – $35 million
2) Jurassic World – $33.5 million
3) Magic Mike XXL – $32 million
4) Terminator: Genisys – $30 million
5) Ted – $18 million
