A somewhat quiet weekend at the box office, as non of the new releases really scared up much in the way of audience dollars or excitement. Here’s what went down:
As predicted, Ouija opened in the top spot, but it only brought in about $20 million. While not chump change, and assuming the budget was fairly low, it’s a decent return for a film with no stars, it’s nowhere near in line with previous Halloween horror streets like the Saw or Paranormal Activity franchises.
Opening in second place with a middling $14 million is Keanu Reeves comeback, John Wick. The film received decent reviews and I truly believe that audiences want to like Keanu, but the film simply failed to get any real traction this weekend. I bet Doctor Strange is looking really good to Reeves right about now.
As for the rest of the top five, Fury dropped to third place with $13.5 million. Gone Girl was in fourth place with $11 million, while The Book of Life closed things out in fifth with $9 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Ouija – $24 million
2) John Wick – $18 million
3) Fury – $16 million
4) Gone Girl – $14 million
5) Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day – $10 million
And here’s how the weekend turned out:
1) Ouija – $20 million
2) John Wick – $14 million
3) Fury – $13.4 million
4) Gone Girl – $11 million
5) The Book of Life – $9 million
Next weekend sees the release of Before I Go To Sleep, Nightcrawler and the Saw 10th Anniversary rerelease. Check back on Friday to see our predictions!
