It was an absolutely huge weekend at the box office, as the two big new releases exceeded expectations and delivered some big bucks. Here’s what went down.
While I was finding every spare minute to read Gone Girl (finished in just three days, I might add), the movie going public was making it the number one film at the box office. The film debut with an outstanding $38 million, a testament to the source material, the clout of David Fincher and the box office draw of Ben Affleck. Throw in reviews were stellar for the most part and you’ve got the big hit at theatres this weekend.
Then again, Annabelle was also a huge attractive for audiences looking for some pre-Halloween scare. The prequel to last year’s The Conjuring grossed an excellent $37 million, again exceeding all expectations and some middling reviews.
As for the rest of the top five, last week’s number one, The Equalizer dropped to third place with $19 million. The Boxtrolls were in fourth place with $12.4 million, while The Maze Runner closed things out in fifth with $12 million. As of Left Behind, it could only muster up $6.5 million to land a distant sixth place.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Gone Girl – $35 million
2) Annabelle – $25 million
3) The Equalizer – $20 million
4) The Boxtrolls – $10 million
5) The Maze Runner – $9 million
