Making box office predictions can be really fun, but as someone who likes observing the weekend trends and results, I always get a kick when we see surprises. It’s not about being right or wrong for when it comes to predictions. Good thing too, since I was off this weekend.
Sticking around in the top spot for a third weekend in a row was Captain America: The Winter Solider, bringing in a solid $26.6 million. The film has now grossed $201 million in North America, seriously outperforming the first film and showing that there’s a huge appetite for Chris Evans in the role of Cap.
Performing well and landing in second place was Rio 2, bringing in $22.5 million, dropping less than 50% from its opening weekend. Heaven is for Real did great business over the Easter weekend, bringing in $21.5 million for its first weekend. Debuting in fourth with a lacklustre $11 million was Transcendence. All signs are now pointing to Johnny Depp and his inability to open a non-Pirates film. Depp may be a crossroads in his career where he should step back from staring roles and take some supporting ones to build up his credibility again. New release A Haunted House 2 closed things out in fifth with $9 million, making back its budget already.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Rio 2 – $24 million
2) Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $23 million
3) Transcendence – $20 million
4) Heaven is for Real – $15 million
5) A Haunted House 2 – $13 million
