This Holiday Season Get Happy! On The Wednesday Run–December 11, 2013

Let’s face it. Not everyone is going to have a happy holiday.

No, there will be those that wander cold streets, alone, following a meandering trail of lit windows where café patrons, restaurant goers and gift shoppers all mingle and laugh and enjoy each other’s company.

There will be those during this season of warmth, love and family, like the corrupt, intoxicated and soul-less hit man named Nick Sax, that simply need to be made happy.

And during this magical season, it’s a tiny blue winged horse that can do just that.

I know it sounds crazy, but you won’t think it when you read the deluxe hardcover compilation of Happy!

Last September, this very column recommended the four-issue mini series, Happy!, created by the acclaimed tem of Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson and published by Image Comics. It was well worth the read.

Set during the holiday season, Happy! tells the story of ex-cop turned hit man, Nick Sax, a boozing, drug addled mess of a man, on the run from old compatriots as well as current employers. Like every good holiday yarn, this is his one last chance at redemption. But in this tale, his guardian angel – and conscience – is a blue, winged horse named Happy who has a large snout, buck teeth and whose positive outlook on life has a habit for pissing Nick off. The big question: is Happy a figment of Nick’s inebriated mind or a real-life entity, here on earth to do good? Is Nick capable of being “good”?

As you might expect from Grant Morrison, Happy! is a wonderful story, lavishly illustrated by Darick Robertson, and wrapped up full of violence, excitement, and emotional meaning. Although it might be great to read at any time of the year, it’s an even better read during the winter holiday season. Here, as an oversized hardcover collection with an included all-new 10-page story, Happy! is even more worthwhile!

Make the run to your local comic book shop today and treat yourself or a loved one this season by giving the gift of Happy!. The trials and tribulations of Nick Sax and the blue horse called Happy, are sure to put a smile on your face!

Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesdays you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP has to get his – before someone else does!
