Trailer Time: A New (And Last) Look At The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Yesterday evening (or was it morning or afternoon?), Director Peter Jackson and his Hobbit film friends, including actors Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Luke Evans (Bard the Bowman), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Evangeline Lilly (Tauriel) and Andy Serkis (Gollum) among many others, gathered in four different cities to engage an ever-growing audience of Tolkein book and film lovers.

From Wellington, New Zealand to London, England to New York City to Los Angeles; across four time zones, questions were asked, answers were given and behind the scenes stories about the making of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug were told.

And then the new, and last, trailer for the second film in the trilogy dropped! You can watch it after the jump!

the hobbit desolation of smaug posterI remember that the trailers for the first Hobbit film, a film that I quite enjoyed, left me feeling a bit like Disney had taken control of the franchise. They were wild rides through a sort of family-fun wonderland; a place where you had to be this tall to enter.

It didn’t feel quite right to me. Certainly not how I felt after seeing those original Lord of the Rings trailers, nearly ten tears ago.

With the newest, and last, trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, I’ve got that old feeling again! Heck, I actually watched this thing in slow motion so I could soak up all of the quick frame cuts! I didn’t do that with the first film in this new franchise. “If this is to end in fire, then we will all burn together.” Indeed! This thing is mysterious, adventurous and, most importantly, epic!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug opens to wide release on December 13 in theatres everywhere. I understand that Cineplex is currently retrofitting theatres to incorporate the ATMOS sound system in anticipation of this film and the others that will surely follow. That’s sound that you have to experience! You can find out a little more about it here.

In the meantime, tell us what you think of the trailer!
