Three new releases hit theatres this weekend, and none of them are guaranteed successes. Here’s our predictions for how they’ll do:
Ender’s Game, the classic Orson Scott Card science fiction novel, receives the big screen adaptation in the midst of controversy surrounding Card’s anti-gay views. Believe me, while some may not like it, the negative publicity surround the author is going to definitely hurt this film. The film will also suffer from a lack of star power, even though Harrison Ford is part of the cast. Look for a first place showing, with a dismal $25 million.

Last Vegas is a comedy featuring the proverbial dream team of Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro and Kevin Kline about a bachelor party in Las Vegas for the last of them to marry. Some may doubt the appeal of the film, but I think this combo of actors will manage to get an adult audience into seats. Look for a second place debut with $18 million.
Free Birds is an animated flick about turkeys from Reel FX Animation (I know, who?) staring the voices of Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler. I’m not expecting much from this one, but it could have a decent debut because of the lack of new family films currently in theatres. Look for a third place debut with $15 million.
As for the rest of the top five, Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa will drop to fourth with $13 million, while Gravity will close things out in fifth with $12.5 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Ender’s Game – $25 million
2) Last Vegas – $18 million
3) Free Birds – $15 million
4) Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa – $13 million
5) Gravity – $12.5 million
