Gravity Soars – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

It was an absolutely huge weekend at the box office, even though one of two high profile new releases failed to find an audience. Here’s what went down:

Gravity_PosterGravity, the much-hyped and critically hailed space film that teams up Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, had a record-breaking debut, grossing $55 million for the biggest October opening in history. Not only did the duos star power draw in audiences, but the film received simply outstanding reviews, which should only help give Gravity some legs over the coming weekends.

Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
Unfortunately, even the combined star power of Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake couldn’t save Runner, Runner from an abysmal opening. With horrendous reviews and adult audiences clearly more excited to see Gravity, Runner, Runner could only muster up $7.9 million to land in third.

As for the rest of the top five, Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 fell to second place, but only dropped 37%, bringing in $21.5 million. Prisoners hit fourth place with $5.7 million, while Rush closed things out in fifth with $4.5 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Gravity – $45 million
2) Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2 – $20 million
3) Runner, Runner – $15 million
4) Prisoners – $6.5 million
