A fairly dull weekend at the box office, as the one major new release failed to make much of an impact. Here’s what went down.
As predicted, Vin Diesel’s Riddick topped the box office, though it only managed to bring in a somewhat lacklustre $18.6 million, less than the $24 million The Chronicles of Riddick made back in 2004. This film was inexpensive though, costing roughly $38 million, so it should manage to at least break even worldwide. However, Diesel will be better off sticking with The Fast and Furious series, not too mention whatever Marvel Studios has planned for him.
As for the rest of the top five, Lee Daniels’ The Butler hit second place with $8.9 million. Instructions Not Included is right behind it with $8.1 million, while We’re The Millers brought in $7.9 million to grab the fourth spot. Planes rounded out the top five with $4 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) Riddick – $25 million
2) Lee Daniels’ The Butler – $9 million
3) We’re The Millers – $7 million
4) One Direction: This Is Us – $6.5 million
5) Planes – $4 million
And here’s the weekend turned out:
