For one film, 2 was the magic number this weekend. For another, not so much. Here’s what went down at the box office.
Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington teamed up for 2 Guns and scored some solid success, opening in first place with $27.4 million. While not a huge number, for a film that isn’t a big, CGi spectacle or franchise, nobody should be complaining.
Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
Far from a success this weekend was The Smurfs 2, which opened in third place with a lacklustre $18 million. It’s hard to say why this one crashed so hard, considering the success of the original. I don’t think anticipation was particularly strong, and the quality of the film is lacking in most people’s eyes. Either way, this was a letdown.
As for the rest of the top five, The Wolverine dropped to second place with $21.7 million, a nearly 60% drop week to week. Its total curreently stands at $95 million. In fourth place The Conjuring with $13.6 million, while Despicable Me 2 closed things out in fifth with $10.3 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) 2 Guns – $38 million
2) The Smurfs 2 – $26 million
3) The Wolverine – $23 million
4) The Conjuring – $13 million
5) Turbo – $9.5 million
