Halle Berry Beats Carrey and Carell – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

It was an absolutely disastrous weekend for the new Steve Carell/Jim Carrey film, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, one that begs the question – how long until we see a third Ace Ventura film? Meanwhile, the real winner was Miss Halle Berry. Here’s what went down.

HALLE-BERRY-THE-CALLIn what had to be considered a major upset, along with a major victory for WWE Studios, The Call managed to leap over The Incredible Burt Wonderstone to claim the second spot at the box office this weekend, grossing a stellar $17 million. The budget for The Call was $15 million so it’s clearly on its way to making a nice little profit. Berry also scored some very strong reviews and the film’s success showed that, in the right movie, the actress has some box office clout. Critics were surprisingly kind to The Call as well, making it’s success over the weekend that much sweeter.

Find out how the rest of the weekend turned out after the jump!
D.O.A was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, which could only muster up $11 million for a third place debut. I had predicted a far stronger number, thinking that the team-up of Carell and Carrey would bring in audiences, but clearly the bloom is off the rose for the both actors as box office draws (in the case of Carrey, it has been for a while). Critics frowned on the film and did audiences; if you want to catch this one, it’ll be on DVD before you know it.

As for the rest of the weekend, Oz: The Great and Powerful held the top spot for the second weekend in a row, grossing an awesome $44 million, bringing its two week total to $143 million. Jack The Giant Slayer was in fourth place with $6 million, while Identity Thief closed out the top five with $4.6 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Oz: The Great And Powerful – $40 million
2) The Incredible Burt Wonderstone – $29 million
3) The Call – $12 million
4) Jack The Giant Slayer – $6 million
5) Identity Thief – $5 million
