Schwarzenegger Flops, Mama Rocks – Biff Bam Pop’s Weekend Box Office Wrap-Up Report

What happens when someone says they’ll be back…and nobody cares?

Hi, Arnold Schwarzenegger. Thanks for showing up…in tenth place.

That’s right, even with decent reviews, the former Terminator’s first staring role in a decade, The Last Stand, debut in an abysmal tenth place at the box office during its opening weekend, bringing in just $6.3 million. I don’t think Ahnold will have this one at the top of his resume going forward.

Jessica ChastainMeanwhile, Mama, presented by Guillermo Del Toro managed to exceed expectations, opening to a stellar $28 million. Having Jessica Chastain in there certainly helped, as she is on a Hollywood role, starring in the top two movies in North America.

Find out how the rest of the top five turned out after the jump!
Chastain also stars in Zero Dark Thirty, which dropped to second place with a still strong $17.6 million, down just 28% from last week. Meanwhile, Silver Linings Playbook burst into the top five going into wide release, landing in third with $11 million. Gangster Squad was in fourth place with $9.1 million, while Broken City debut close behind in fifth with a lacklustre $9 million.

So, to recap, here were our predictions:

1) Mama – $20 million
2) Zero Dark Thirty – $18 million
3)  The Last Stand – $15 million
4) Broken City – $12 million
5) Gangster Squad – $9 million

And here’s how the weekend turned out:

1) Mama – $28 million
2) Zero Dark Thirty – $17.6 million
3) Silver Linings Playbook – $11 million
4) Gangster Quad – $9.1 million
5) Broken City – $9 million

Next weekend sees the release of Parker, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Movie 43. Be sure to check back on Friday for our predictions!

  1. I guess we won’t be seeing him at the party.

  2. So I was really wrong then ;D
Wow Mama did really well, reviews haven’t even been that good. Do you think it was Jessica Chastain or Del Toro’s name that sold this to people?

    1. Man, that’s a good question. I would have thought it was Del Toro but after the Golden Globe win and talking to an actor friend who says there’s a real buzz about Chastain right now, she may have very well carried this thing this weekend.

      1. Will be interesting to see when Pacific Rim comes out because he is the most famous of the people behind it 😀
