It’s Halloween weekend, but when it comes to tricks or treats, I’m guessing that Paranormal Activity 3 is looking at getting seriously tricked by a cat in costume. Here’s how I predict the weekend is going to turn out.
Puss In Boots is the big new release of the weekend, staring the voice of Antonio Banderas as the title character, first seen in the Shrek series of films. There’s no question that there’s a built-in audience for this movie, and it should do great business with familes looking for something to see together. While it won’t do the sort of numbers Shrek pulls in ($100 million + openings), look for Puss In Boots to claim the weekend with a solid $45 million.
Also new in theatres this weekend is the science-fiction film In Time, staring Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, and Olivia Wilde. While the trailers have looked interesting (a world where nobody lives past 25 and time is a currency), I don’t think Timberlake’s core fan base is going to be rushing to see him in a sci-fi flick. JT has proven he’s got acting chops, but I don’t think he’s reached the point where he can open a movie to big business. Look for In Time to debut in third place with $12.5 million.
The final big release this weekend is The Rum Diary staring Johnny Depp and based on the book by Hunter S. Thompson. Fans and critics have been eager for this one, since it’s Depp returning to the Thompson world for the first time since his acclaimed performance in Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, back in 1998. Keep in mind, while it’s become a cult classic, that particular film was a bomb when it hit theatres. I don’t see this one performing any better, since the source material is obscure when compared to Fear and Loathing. I’m predicting The Rum Diary barely makes the top five with $7 million.
As for the rest of the top five, look for Paranormal Activity 3 to drop from its opening weekend numbers, but still pull in a healthy $21 million to land in second place (it helps to be the only horror film out there Halloween weekend). Meanwhile, Footloose should continue its steady pace to hit the fourth spot with $9 million.
So, to recap, here are our predictions:
1) Puss in Boots – $45 million
2) Paranormal Activity 3 – $21 million
3) In Time – $12.5 million
4) Footloose – $9 million
5) The Rum Diaries – $7 million
