Every Wednesday, JP makes the after-work run to his local downtown comic book shop. Comics arrive on Wednesday’s you see and JP, fearful that the latest issue will sell out, rushes out to purchase his copy. This regular, weekly column will highlight a particularly interesting release, written in short order, of course, because JP’s has to get his – before someone else does!
Daredevil: Reborn #1
Writer: Andy Diggle
Artist: Davide Gianfelice
Marvel Comics
There’s been a lot going on within the pages of Daredevil of late. Actually, there’s been a lot going on with that character for the better part of a decade.
First, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev reinvigorated the character in a highly acclaimed, multi-year run that has since been compiled in a series of omnibus-sized hard covers from publisher, Marvel Comics. Then Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark took over the reigns to much fanfare, their storyline also receiving the omnibus treatment. Now, writer Andy Diggle and artist Davide Gianfelice bring us Daredevil: Reborn, the first issue of a 4-part mini series that serves to earn redemption for the titular hero.
Diggle has been guiding “The Man Without Fear” for the past few years in a storyline that saw Daredevil destroy his own heroic legacy by becoming the leader of the villainous organization, The Hand. One would probably have to read the previous storyline, Shadowland, to get the full gist of this new series, but I’m really curious to see what happens next – how Matt Murdoch can pick up the pieces of his shattered self and how New York’s Hell’s Kitchen will fare going forward. Being a big fan of both Diggle’s and Gianfelice’s work, I know it’s going to be great! Besides, it’s got an awesome cover by the artist known as Jock to boot!
Heading out on my Wednesday run now… ’till next week!
