From his series ‘Nathan For You’, ‘The Rehearsal’, and even his first turn at “actual” fiction, ‘The Curse’, defining the work of Nathan Fielder, one of Canada’s most esoteric exports, has been elusive at best. Everything from his candid, monotone delivery and the elaborate crafting of his projects feels like it was conceived by someone from another planet. Nothing he’s made so far falls neatly into either fantasy or reality, and there is no one out there doing it at the level and the scale that he is.
In his new project, a (documentary?) film from A24 called You Can See Everything, Fielder invites, or perhaps ‘drags’ is a better term, you along as he takes up residence with the notorious Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes and her family, who have promised him unfettered access to their lives over a period of about three years and covering the 34 days before the Sili-con Valley fraudster begins her prison sentence. To accomplish this, Nathan teamed up with Lance Oppenheim, best known for directing Primetime, the (also) ultra-controversial biopic of Chris Hansen starring Robert Pattinson that releases this weekend.
In someone else’s hands, this could be a reasonably straight-ahead project. Holmes’ story has already been told in “real” documentary form by the best documentarian in the game, Alex Gibney in The Inventor (2019). It was also fictionalized in Elizabeth Meriwether’s 2022 miniseries ‘The Dropout’, in which Holmes was portrayed by Amanda Seyfried. But if you know the work of Nathan Fielder, you know that nothing with his name on it could ever be defined as “straight-ahead” as it, once again, blurs the lines between reality and fiction. In the new trailer for the film which comes out next month, we’re left with way more questions than answers (the mark of a great movie trailer) as we see Nathan delving into Holmes’ marriage and family life by grilling her husband Billy Evans and casting his twisted gaze on one of the most opaque figures in modern technology and crime (sorry, Elon).
This is one of the 2026 movies I’m prioritizing seeing on or as close to opening day as possible. Check out the trailer here, and get ready to fall into the abyss of Nathan Fielder’s mind once again.
